Vehicles are increasingly interconnected. Cooperative and connected systems provide intelligent communication between vehicles (vehicle-to-vehicle) and between vehicles and traffic systems (vehicle-to-infrastructure) along the road. This communication can take place over a short distance with Wifi-11p or via a cloud connection (cellular).
The main drivers for this intelligent communication are road safety, energy saving, and traffic efficiency. In 2019, Europe had 22,660 road fatalities. Further developing intelligent communication will make roads safer. For example, if a car suddenly brakes, intervehicle communication can ensure that the cars behind it also brake and that a collision is prevented. In addition, more information means that traffic can be better regulated, reducing the number of traffic jams and travel time. This also contributes to lowering emissions and improving air quality in urban areas, as fewer stops are required by regulating traffic and speed recommendations for individual road users.
In recent years, projects such as InterCor and C-Mobile have worked on a European standard for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Much experience has also been gained with local standards and initiatives in the field of connected intelligent traffic lights, such as the Talking Traffic partnership in the Netherlands. It is now up to the EU countries to harmonize these standards into an open, proven European ecosystem, enabling each party to participate through the C-Roads program. The ecosystem creates more infrastructural tools that can communicate with connected, cooperative, and automated cars. This allows for more possibilities for smart applications in cities and between cities. Priority services can be offered in cities so that transport can be made more sustainable. And what about reporting stranded vehicles and traffic jams to vehicles in unidentified areas? In short: cooperative, connected and/or hybrid systems that meet European standards make traffic safer, more efficient, and more sustainable.
Cooperative systems are often associated with short-range communications. In Europe, cooperative systems currently run on Wifi-11p and/or LTE-V2X. This communication requires a transmitter and transponder comparable to traditional Wi-Fi, but with very fast set-up times. This speed makes short-distance communication very suitable for vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The fast response time currently offers this system a considerable edge over a connected system.
A connected system involves cellular cloud-based communication, which means that transmitters and transponders are not required. This is especially interesting for smart mobility solutions, as it offers the possibility of direct contact with individual road users. This makes it possible to extract more information early on than from a detection loop. The kind of road user (truck or car) and their turning intention are easy to spot. In addition, communication with cyclists and pedestrians is possible via a smartphone application.
